With a documented history spanning centuries and a traditional presence in eastern Romania, the variety was long associated with simple wines intended for everyday consumption. In recent years, however, B\u0103beasc\u0103 Neagr\u0103 has undergone a visible process of revaluation, becoming increasingly present in the portfolios of producers interested in authenticity, terroir, and modern wine styles.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Origin and identity<\/h2>\n\n<p>An indigenous variety of historical Moldova, B\u0103beasc\u0103 \/ Rar\u0103 Neagr\u0103 has a clear regional identity, but also a cross-border one. In the Republic of Moldova, where it is known exclusively as Rar\u0103 Neagr\u0103, the variety has been consistently preserved and promoted, including in premium-oriented wines. Legislative differences and consumer preferences have shaped Rar\u0103 Neagr\u0103 in Moldova into a class of more extractive wines, with deep and intense color. Meanwhile, the Romanian style \u2014 more faithful to the grape\u2019s natural characteristics \u2014 has brought forward lighter, more supple wines, with less intense color, spicy nuances, and subtle vegetal notes.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.winesofromania.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Rara-neagra-2-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-65289\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Seven years after planting, Vintruvian Estates, which owns the largest plantation of B\u0103beasc\u0103 \/ Rar\u0103 Neagr\u0103 in Romania, has reached the desired quality level to initiate <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.winesofromania.com\/en\/rara-neagra-vintruvian-estates-launches-three-expressions-of-an-authentic-romanian-grape-variety\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/staging.winesofromania.com\/rara-neagra-manuscris-vintruvian-estates-rose-rosu-spumant\/\">a rebranding process for the variety<\/a>. From now on, it will appear in the wines of Via Viticola Sarica Niculi\u021bel (Caii de la Letea) under the name Rar\u0103 Neagr\u0103.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vineyard Area and Geographic Distribution<\/h2>\n\n<p>In Romania, B\u0103beasc\u0103 Neagr\u0103 covers approximately 2,589 hectares, making it the second most planted indigenous black grape variety.<\/p>\n\n<p>In terms of vineyard distribution, the variety is overwhelmingly concentrated in the Dealurile Moldovei region, which accounts for over 2,150 hectares \u2014 the vast majority of Romania\u2019s B\u0103beasc\u0103 Neagr\u0103 plantings. It is followed at a considerable distance by: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dobrogea Hills (193 ha)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Southern Sands (139 ha)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Danube Terraces (63 ha)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Muntenia and Oltenia Hills (36 ha)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>At county level, the concentration becomes even more evident. Gala\u021bi leads by far, with over 1,840 hectares of B\u0103beasc\u0103 Neagr\u0103, confirming its historical role in cultivating the variety. Beyond light red wines focused on freshness and drinkability, the variety is increasingly used in personality-driven ros\u00e9s and, more recently, in sparkling wines.
