Especially for me, since I hadn\u2019t set foot in Cetatea de Balt\u0103 in about 20 years\u2026 maybe even more. Not for Marinela, who is practically \u201cone of the family,\u201d nor for the other two, it was their first time. I\u2019m not sure how much Andrei and Andreea appreciated the experience, since they had nothing to compare it with, but for me it was deeply moving. Somewhere between \u201clook, it can be done\u201d and \u201cWow! Wow! Wow!\u201d     <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8cf9224 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8cf9224\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Big Companies Move at a Different Pace<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4ba5058 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4ba5058\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I entered the world of wine at a time when over 80% of the market was dominated by Jidvei, Murfatlar, Vincon (now Beciul Domnesc), and Cotnari. Reca\u0219 was also beginning to gain ground and seemed like a more dynamic company. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22322ad elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"22322ad\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 2004\u20132005, I visited Cetatea de Balt\u0103 on a trip organised by the PNVV (National Wine and Vine Growers\u2019 Association), along with fellow journalists from the \u201cWine Press Club.\u201d I had the honour and pleasure of meeting the founder of the modern Jidvei &#8211; the one who saved a bankrupt state-run farm (IAS), Liviu Nec\u0219ulescu.  <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-622401a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"622401a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Renovation of the Bethlen-Haller Castle had just begun, at least enough to make the ground floor usable and to host guests in the cellar. There, the legendary chief oenologist, Ioan Buia, tirelessly talked about wine, winemaking, the region, and its people. Things were moving slowly at the winery, but they were moving &#8211; modern tanks had begun to replace the old \u201cpolstif\u201d vats made of high-density polystyrene and fibreglass. Everything was going to change, but it would take many, many years, and we, still young, wanted everything tomorrow &#8211; if not today. It was hard to understand why a big company moved at a different pace.   <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1bc9eb5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1bc9eb5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From that meeting with Liviu Nec\u0219ulescu, more than the long-term plans that seemed too far off, what struck me most was this: every resident, even if they didn\u2019t work for Jidvei, could receive a loaf of bread and a bottle of wine every day. Times were hard, and this gesture surely helped many families, more than words can say. A man from Constan\u021ba had become a pillar of the community in the heart of Transylvania&#8230;  <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-533bd7a elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"533bd7a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.winesofromania.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Ritmul-schimbarii-in-marile-companii-de-vin-1024x683.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-62510\" alt=\"Companiile mari se mi\u0219c\u0103 \u00een alt ritm\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2fdb293 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2fdb293\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Step by Step, Jidvei Became a Benchmark for Romanian Wine<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c0b2329 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c0b2329\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not long after, I was swept into the whirlwind of small and medium wine producers &#8211; a world where something was always happening: tastings everywhere, new product lines, new producers, alliances, partnerships. I saw Jidvei from a distance, but surrounded by prestigious labels, accessible owners, events, and travels, I didn\u2019t pay it much attention.  <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f147dec elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f147dec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2012, Jidvei launched the Mysterium and Owner\u2019s Choice lines, its first premium-positioned wines. Year after year, more medals followed, and surprisingly, even their more affordable wines began winning awards.  <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3208bef elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3208bef\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For me, the turning point came around 2018\u20132019. I was cooking and needed a wine with high acidity. My usually full stash only had an old Mysterium Ros\u00e9 from a few years earlier &#8211; received at a wine fair and forgotten on the shelf. Since I only cook with wines I\u2019d also drink, I decided to taste it first. And I was stunned. It wasn\u2019t just good &#8211; it would have been sacrilege to use it for cooking! Perfectly balanced (at the fair, I thought it too acidic\u2026), delicately fruity but well-defined, expressive, even complex\u2026 Wow. An unexpected surprise.        <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e3b79b0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e3b79b0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around the same time, Jidvei was becoming a \u201cSuperbrand,\u201d their Ana Sauvignon Blanc and Feteasc\u0103 Regal\u0103 winning grand gold medals at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. At the same time, Time magazine dedicated a major feature to Jidvei.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ff90c8e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ff90c8e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jidvei had become a Romanian benchmark, on a level far beyond what I remembered, defined by quality and performance.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e90f847 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e90f847\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Bethlen-Haller Castle: A Small World of Sustainability<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a203855 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a203855\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then came the pandemic, market reshuffles, new problems for new times\u2026 I hadn\u2019t returned to Jidvei until now, in the scorching days of July 2025 AD. I had tasted many of their wines in recent years, many of them remarkable. I had reconnected with the winery, now a valued partner of Wines of Romania, but my travels hadn\u2019t brought me even close to this corner of the world.  <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7874471 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"7874471\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.winesofromania.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Castelul-Bethlen-Haller-exemplu-de-sustenabilitate-si-turism-premium-1024x731.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-62512\" alt=\"Castelul Bethlen Haller\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-55e85e4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"55e85e4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Monday evening, around 6 PM, in the usually cool Transylvania, blew a hot wind I hadn\u2019t felt since Dubai\u2019s desert. The third day of a heatwave. The lawn spanning several hectares around the castle struggled to stay green, helped in the morning by people with hoses and during the day by sprinklers. Unbothered by its colour, two lawn-mowing robots tirelessly worked around trees and paths. The storage sheds and ruins from 20 years ago were now era-inspired buildings, housing guest accommodations, offices, or leisure rooms (yes, with billiards).    <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-766fb4d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"766fb4d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside, a blessed coolness and a note informing tourists that all buildings are ecologically built, with low electricity consumption, and suggesting they think twice before opening windows. The rooms &#8211; discreetly luxurious, with the bathroom showing slightly more opulence than the subtly designed living space. Stables, horses, archery, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=u_aQNTxwfQA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">countless experiences<\/a><\/em>.   <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0fc5c52 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0fc5c52\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But more than that: ecological greenhouses, hydroponic greenhouses, livestock farms &#8211; all part of an impeccable model of circular economy and self-sufficiency. Except for the game meat, which is also locally sourced, everything consumed at the Castle is produced on-site. And it\u2019s so delicious you won\u2019t want to leave.  <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0e3ec4a elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"0e3ec4a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"766\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.winesofromania.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Gradina-1024x766.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-62514\" alt=\"Gr\u0103dina castelului Jidvei\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e9206ba elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e9206ba\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Nelu M\u0103rgineanu, the Man Who Makes the Place<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0e0e31c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0e0e31c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next day, we meet Ioan M\u0103rgineanu &#8211; known as Nelu or Nelu\u021bu &#8211; Jidvei\u2019s technical director of viticulture. He\u2019s been working here since 1990 &#8211; a lifetime. He witnessed the plundering of state-run farms (IAS) when, as he puts it, \u201cwell, a wealthy class had to emerge.\u201d Back then, the board members were politically appointed. They would set up private companies and sell goods needed by the IAS back to it at prices tens of times higher than market value. Or they would buy grapes or wine at below production cost. I\u2019ve never heard of any of them being prosecuted. Jidvei\u2019s good fortune was the arrival of the Nec\u0219ulescu family in 1999, by which time there wasn\u2019t much left.        <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2c691e4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"2c691e4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.winesofromania.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/poza-vie-1024x683.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-62516\" alt=\"Vie Jidvei\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-021dc55 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"021dc55\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naturally, he knows every inch of the land. He tells you about all the places you can see &#8211; and everything you can\u2019t. Jidvei\u2019s vineyards, totalling nearly 2,000 hectares (of the 2,500 owned), would stretch across a circle with a 20-kilometre diameter. But the actual roads make the distance between opposite ends feel like 40 or even 50 kilometres. Whoever named this region \u201cT\u00e2rnave Plateau\u201d was either a jokester or had never set foot here. Hills as far as the eye can see, some so steep you can barely fit 2\u20134 rows of vines per terrace. Driving through it feels like a rollercoaster ride. When it rains, there are places you can\u2019t reach even with a tractor.       <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cfb5394 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cfb5394\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Depopulation Forces a Rethink of Vineyard Structure<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8aae90a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8aae90a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nelu replants over 100 hectares every year. For the past five years, he\u2019s led a new project &#8211; switching the vineyards from the classic Guyot system (closer to the ground, with multiple wires) to \u201ccordone libero,\u201d a high-trellis system using a single wire 1.2 meters off the ground. The vines require fewer treatments and can be worked on mechanically &#8211; a crucial factor since there\u2019s no longer any manual labour available. The locals have left, and now 300 Nepalese workers need accommodation, food, and salaries &#8211; but more importantly, they bring uncertainty. You never know when they might suddenly decide to leave for Germany or even further. It\u2019s happened before.     <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-886cee6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"886cee6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The downside of highly trained vines designed for mechanical work is that all interventions cause some degree of stress, so the vine\u2019s lifespan is around 25 years, after which it needs to be replaced. Also, it\u2019s more exposed to storms and strong winds, which can harm young vines. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fa767a5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fa767a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With 2,000 hectares, replanting means at least 100 hectares need to be updated annually, especially since nothing is harvested in the first three years, and losses occur as well. These are more often due to hail than frost, because the climate has changed radically in the past 30 years. \u201cWhen I got here, the vines were buried over winter &#8211; we used the Transylvanian earth rings. Minus 24 degrees was normal in winter. Now, we\u2019re surprised when it gets to -15, and there are winters when we barely see a few consecutive days at -7 or -8 degrees. A Belgian retiree bought a few houses so his friends could stay when visiting. But further along, in Cr\u0103ciunelul de Sus, the disaster is complete.    <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-215cb0a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"215cb0a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the entrance, the roadside cross (there\u2019s one at every junction) is half toppled and overgrown. A few ruins follow, the last houses sheltering 5\u20136 elderly people, and then the village is swallowed by nature. Here and there, a gate outline peeks through dense jungle-like vegetation. A cross marks a crossroad leading to nowhere. \u201cThis used to be a street. A street with houses,\u201d says Nelu, stopping the car. \u201cClassmates of mine lived here.\u201d We look at the forest. There\u2019s nothing to suggest that homes once stood here.<br>On the way out of the village, we pass the last investment made by one of the emigrants &#8211; a brand-new guesthouse, complete with charming little cottages and a concrete slab for parking. Yesterday, even in the mountain-shaded Olt Valley, it was 37\u00b0C. Nelu is worried; it\u2019s the time when grapes begin to compact, the stage where the berries should be growing. Without water, nothing happens. The entire vineyard is at risk. We reach T\u0103uni, one of the few large-scale open-air wineries. It can process and store over 5 million litres of wine, coming from the 750 hectares of surrounding vineyards (down from over 800, due to replanting efforts).       <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ff391b6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ff391b6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originally, the plan was to install the fermentation and storage tanks first, then enclose the whole facility. But the tanks were designed from the start with double walls and 30 cm insulation. This means the cooling is directed inward efficiently, with no energy wasted cooling the ambient air. Plus, being located on a hillside, the constant wind keeps the space cleaner than any enclosed winery could. In the sparkling wine section (which I visit on Wednesday), bottles mature on lees for two years or more. On Friday, violinist Alexandru Tomescu is set to test his Stradivarius violin here, not just because of the exceptional acoustics, but probably also because music is good for wine. A different story, different history. And we chat &#8211; it\u2019s the perfect moment for an interview. He\u2019s the president of ONIV (National Interprofessional Wine&amp;Vine Organisation), and the entire industry is panicking over the new wine excise duties. We touch briefly on the subject &#8211; we share the same opinion. He runs the largest family-owned wine business in Romania, has set record after record &#8211; including owning the \u201clargest family vineyard in Europe\u201d &#8211; and has managed more vineyards and wineries than anyone else in the country. His wrinkles nearly vanish. As he recalls everything that\u2019s been built within this 20-kilometre radius of the Castle, he smiles. You know what his last words were? \u2018Do good.\u2019 And after he passed, no one ever came to me with an education or health issue that I didn\u2019t help with.
