This is one of the oldest wine-related beliefs: the thicker and slower the traces left on the glass walls, the \u201cbetter\u201d the wine is said to be. \n\nIn reality, the so-called \u201ctears\u201d or \u201clegs\u201d of the wine have no direct connection to quality\u2014only to the wine\u2019s density (viscosity), meaning a higher content of alcohol or sugar.\n\n<blockquote><b>\u201cThere are many ways to evaluate a wine, but millimeters aren\u2019t among the proper measuring tools.\u201d \u2014 Wines of Romania \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-49080e2 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"49080e2\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;jet_parallax_layout_list&quot;:[]}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-187853c\" data-id=\"187853c\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-98a34fc elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"98a34fc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A (silver) teaspoon in an open bottle of sparkling wine preserves the bubbles<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bed5c73 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bed5c73\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This myth has a pseudo-scientific explanation: metal cools quickly and chills the air around it, allegedly preventing CO\u2082 loss. But no, it doesn\u2019t work. The myth has been tested repeatedly. You&#8217;re better off investing a few bucks in a proper sparkling wine stopper, which can preserve it somewhat &#8211; though much depends on how much wine is left. If there\u2019s less than one-third of the bottle, so much CO\u2082 will be lost that you might as well finish it.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-92f13ff elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"92f13ff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Wines with screw caps are lower quality<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-41512e5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"41512e5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>While it\u2019s true that you won\u2019t find a fancy ch\u00e2teau or rare, expensive wine with a screw cap &#8211; at least not in the near future &#8211; this category includes many premium and even some super-premium wines. Sometimes it&#8217;s the producer\u2019s philosophy; other times, an economic decision. Either way, there are screw-capped wines not only of excellent quality but also with aging potential of five years or more. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-f9ceeb2 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"f9ceeb2\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;jet_parallax_layout_list&quot;:[]}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-6c91aef\" data-id=\"6c91aef\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-45336e4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"45336e4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Bag-in-box wines are mediocre<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3027a61 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3027a61\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Again, a myth &#8211; but one with fairly recent roots. Twenty or thirty years ago, bag-in-box was seen as packaging only for cheap, fast-consumption wine. Today, it&#8217;s favored by many concerned about environmental protection, and in regions like Scandinavia, it\u2019s the most popular packaging among consumers. The quality of bag-in-box wines has steadily improved &#8211; try one of the award-winning wines from the National Bag-in-Box Wine Competition and see for yourself.   <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1147373 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1147373\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Blends are inferior to single-varietal wines<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ee7480e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ee7480e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>French makes a distinction between coupage and assemblage &#8211; the former having a slightly negative connotation (helping a poor wine by blending it with a better one), while the latter refers to a true alchemical art.<\/p><p>The more universal term is blend, and the goal is to create a wine better than any of its components &#8211; a demonstration of balance and harmony among attributes like acidity, alcohol, extract, and aroma. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9f0aed5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9f0aed5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">All wines improve with age<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-85e0acb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"85e0acb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>We wish this myth were true. But wine is a living being &#8211; it is born, lives, and dies. Sometimes even before reaching your glass. Every wine has an \u201coptimal drinking plateau,\u201d after which it declines &#8211; sometimes rapidly, within 2\u20133 years of harvest, other times after many decades, but degradation is inevitable.
