First mention of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chardonnay<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comes as back as 1583, under its synonym <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beaunois<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning from Beaune. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A more reliable mention of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chardonnay<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is between 1685-1690 in a small village called Saint-Sorlin where it was referred to as \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chardonnet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and appreciated as making the best wines! <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The modern spelling <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chardonnay<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> started to be used in the 20th century.<\/span><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chardonnay<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was confused with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinot Blanc<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until the end of the 19th century because of their similarities. Family related, we can say without doubt (DNA parentage analysis proved) that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chardonnay\u2019s<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parents<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> x <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gouais Blanc<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Bowers, 1999). His siblings are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gamay Noir<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aligot\u00e9<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chardonnay<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> itself has been used as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parent<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of several different varieties around the world. In France <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chardonnay<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was crossed with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baroque<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to breed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liliorila<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; in the US it was bred to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seyval Blanc<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to produce <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chardonel<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In late March and early April, Burgundy, Champagne and selectively in South of England, grape growers use  <a href=\"https:\/\/winesofromania.com\/en\/do-you-know-the-threshold-of-sensitivity-of-the-vine-at-late-spring-frosts\/\">chaufferettes<\/a> (small heaters) and aspersions (spraying young shoots with water to form a protective coat of ice against frost) to protect the delicate vine buds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The grapevines <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chardonnay<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are usually prunes in Guyot style. Heavy rains and low temperatures in May reduce the considerably fruit setting. Otherwise it\u2019s very easy or the most easy grape variety to grow!  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chardonnay<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is best suited to limestone soils or calcareous clay soils.
