I would call noble grapevine varieties all the varieties found on other continents too at the time of the appearance of the devastating insect in Europe. Because that was an indisputable turning point, a moment of great change in world viticulture. Since that T-zero, nothing has been the same. This is how the Old World and the New World of viticulture was born, European viticulture and the rest of the World, the grafted grapevines and those on their own roots. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The later created grapevine varieties on the genetic background of the pre-phylloxerically varieties should be called<\/span> <b>varieties with noble ancestry<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or<\/span> <b>noble descendants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Just as the newly created varieties in the last decades, with resistance to certain diseases or stress factors are called <\/span><b>PIWI<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, resistant varieties. Just as the crossings between species of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitis<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genus are called interspecific hybrids or, within the<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vinifera<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">species, intraspecific.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A clarification in this sense is necessary, all the more so since the climate changes that are still being discussed and the need to adopt ecological and economic habits, enforce new horizons on genetic research and the improvement of varieties, not only in viticulture.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why would only the 6 French varieties be noble grapevines: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cabernet Sauvignon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merlot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinot noir<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chardonnay<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sauvignon blanc<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riesling. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gina Hennen, winemaker at Adelsheim Vineyard in Newberg, Oregon, says that &#8220;these varieties have earned their royal title in part because they have been planted around the globe and have formed the &#8216;cornerstone&#8217; of winemaking over the last few centuries.&#8221; [2] It is the opinion of a winemaker who works with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chardonnay<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinot noir<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If she would vinify <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofromania.com\/en\/all-about-feteasca-neagra\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feteasca neagra<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Touriga nacional<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, could she say that they are not noble ones?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How could they be inferior<\/span>: <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Syrah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sangiovese<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saperavi<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? In 1961, the largest wine-growing area was owned by Italy: 1.7 million ha. Spain also had almost 1.7 million ha, and France was only in third place, with approximately 1.4 million ha. The Soviet Union then had a little over 1 million ha.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why would these be noble, especially the French varieties? Germany had 79 thousand ha and it is said that  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riesling<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a noble variety. Why? Because it lends itself to aging? Because it is grown in special conditions, mostly on steep slopes? Why wouldn&#8217;t     <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assyrtiko<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be a noble variety, as Greece then had over 200 thousand ha and difficult soil and climate conditions, as it has now too.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romania had around 200 thousand ha. But  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Francusa<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is not included in the list of noble varieties, although in the past centuries it was the star of wines on the tables of European kings and emperors, in the famous Cotnari assortment!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you know that among the Romanian pre-phylloxerically grapevine varieties, the ones that survived and are cultivated even today: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batuta neagra, Feteasca alba, Feteasca neagra, Galbena de Odobesti, Grasa de Cotnari<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Negru moale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Negru vartos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamaioasa romaneasca alba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rosie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vanata<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have undisturbed biological purity? Why wouldn&#8217;t they be noble? <\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-ce94a28 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"ce94a28\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;jet_parallax_layout_list&quot;:[]}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-494f74c\" data-id=\"494f74c\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-432342c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"432342c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><b>Noble could mean distinguished, elegant, perfect, graceful. <\/b><\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-c52e732 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"c52e732\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;jet_parallax_layout_list&quot;:[]}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-8000fbc\" data-id=\"8000fbc\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-366ed18 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"366ed18\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noble can be synonymous with distinguished, elegant, perfect, with grace. Maybe that&#8217;s why, the great professor Viorel Stoian [3] said about the<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burgund mare<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the western wine-growing area of Romania, that it is a wine that should not be classified among the high-quality ones, because it is too vigorous, full-bodied, tannic and intensely colored. What could be contradicted at any time by Austrian oenology, with its fine wines of this variety ( <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blaufr\u00e4nkisch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, syn AUS, at no. 427 in the OIV varieties Catalog).<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, if Gina Hennen states that noble grapevine varieties are those that have an &#8220;increased ability to express how and where they were grown&#8221; [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.winemag.com\/2022\/02\/15\/noble-grapes-wine-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2<\/a>], then I don&#8217;t think there is nor a nobler variety than this <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burgund mare (<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grosser Burgunder<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blaufrankisch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kekfrankos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frankovka<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limberger<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which, cultivated on the steep hills of the Minis vineyard, Arad-Romania, faithfully expresses the rock rich in iron oxides, the thinny soil poor in humus, but rich in microelements and exposed to the sun at the expense of a rich water regime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It is not enough to choose a noble grapevine variety to make a noble wine,&#8221; says Patrick Carteyron, winegrower and owner of Ch\u00e2teau Penin near the village of Bordeaux G\u00e9nissac (France), who says noble grapes have the potential to produce great wines under the right circumstances, but the choices made by growers and winemakers are key, as are factors such as soil and climate. [2] Or, as one of Murphy&#8217;s laws said: &#8220;if you put a spoonful of sewer water in a barrel of wine, everything will turn into sewer water. That&#8217;s probably why competitions specific to a certain variety are held: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cmsauvignon.com\/fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Concours Mondial du Sauvignon<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chardonnay-du-monde.com\/HomeCdM.fr.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Chardonnay du Monde<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because they don&#8217;t really win medals in the classic competitions.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do we do with the noble<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinot noir<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if already, on a planetary level,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mondial-des-pinots.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>the Mondial des Pinots<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is held, where the entire family of grapes from the<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinot<\/span><\/i> group is judged.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Brothers  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinot noir<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also noble? Or are they, but like that&#8230; stepbrothers? At Vinarium 2022, the Grand Gold Medal was awarded to 8 wines, among which only one &#8220;noble variety&#8221;. And the one picked from the Moldavian plains. [4] The highest score was obtained by a Spanish variety, which is not on the short list of so-called &#8220;noble&#8221; grapevine varieties.    <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I remain convinced that any grapevine variety, which does not have in its ancestry any crossing with phylloxera-resistant hybrids or which does not fall into the category of PIWI-resistant varieties, should be called noble grapevine variety. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Torrontes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vidal, Cramposia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and many like them, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are noble winegrape varieties<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they have &#8220;blue blood&#8221;, because they come from an area where they were native, not grounded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I do not support the theory that cosmopolitan grapevine varieties, which can be cultivated anywhere in the world, are more &#8220;royal&#8221; than the autochthonous ones for each adopting country. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romania officially has 78 grape varieties registered in the list of 162 wine varieties allowed for planting.
