Pietroasa Research Institute (Stațiunea de Cercetare Pietroasa) is the commercial brand of the Pietroasa-Istrița Research and Development Station for Viticulture and Pomiculture, affiliated with the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest. It has played a key role in producing and researching high-quality wines in Romania. Founded in response to the phylloxera crisis that devastated European vineyards in the late 19th century, it was initially known as the Pietroasa Nursery. It was the first Romanian unit dedicated to replanting affected vineyards, with a collection of 737 vine varieties worldwide. In 1924, the Pietroasa Viticultural Oenology Station was established to research viticulture and develop solutions for specific challenges. It also founded a school for agricultural apprentices. In 1928, it was renamed Pietroasa Experimental Vineyard, the first Romanian viticulture unit to conduct systematic experiments on fruit-bearing varieties, pruning methods, and disease control. In 1958, it became the Pietroasa Experimental Viticulture Station. Self-financing transformed grape production into commercial wines, with significant influence from winemaker Cornel Bănițā. This process helped local Romanian varieties such as Tămâioasa Românească, Grasa de Cotnari, and Busuioaca de Bohotin become recognized for their quality, solidifying the reputation of the Pietroasa region.
