Domeniul Catleya, located in the Corcova region of Mehedinți, blends literary history with viticulture traditions. The winery’s name is inspired by the Catleya orchid, a symbol of love in Marcel Proust’s novel "In Search of Lost Time." The estate is situated on the former Bibescu family estate, known for connections with prominent writers, including Proust and Mihail Sebastian, who wrote the first two acts of "The Star Without a Name" there in 1943. The winery was founded in 2007 by French entrepreneurs Laurent and Dominique Pfeffer, and Frédéric Vauthier. Vauthier is a Bordeaux winemaker with a long tradition in wine production and 18 generations of experience. Laurent Pfeffer, an oenologist educated in Bordeaux, discovered Romania in 2003 and revitalized the vineyards on the Bibescu estate in 2007. Domaine Catleya’s wines are divided into the Freamăt and Epopee lines. "Freamăt" pays homage to the connection between the winery and literature, using Marcel Proust’s handwriting on the label. Additionally, the winery adopts sustainable practices, including using organic products, manual maintenance, and hand-harvesting. Grapes are transported in small crates to preserve their integrity and quality.
