After years of renovations, the Apogeum Manor was reopened in 2018 and is now connected to the winery where one of the most highly regarded Fetească Neagră wines is produced. At Apogeum Manor, Prince Nicolae, brother of King Carol II, had a love affair with Ioana Dumitrescu Doletti, the daughter of a local from Tohani. Defying the Royal House’s rules, he married her in 1931. The owner of Apogeum Winery, Virgil Mândru, took a gamble on Fetească Neagră, a native grape variety whose potential few had foreseen. His desire to showcase the qualities of this wine led to the creation of Apogeum, a premium wine produced from over half a century-old vines located in the Dealu Mare region. This wine is crafted using traditional methods in ceramic amphorae — a rare technique in Romania — and has won awards across three continents. For instance, the 2017 vintage earned a gold medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2021. Above all, Apogeum is a tribute to Fetească Neagră and Romanian wine culture, standing as a collectible wine.
